New York Times Calls The Good Thief “Darkly Transporting”

Orphan’s Tales Wins Mythopoeic Award
Catherynne Valente’s The Orphan’s Tales duology, In the Night Garden and In the Cities of Coin and Spice, was named the winner of the 2008 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature. The award is given to the fantasy novel, multi-volume novel, or single-author story collection for adults published during the previous year that best exemplifies “the spirit of the Inklings,” an informal Oxford literary circle that included J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams, among others. The award was presented at the Mythcon convention in New Britain, CT.

Two Instant New York Times Bestsellers
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows debuts as the #5 Hardcover Fiction Bestseller on this week’s New York Times list. Karin Slaughter also graces the Hardcover Fiction list at #15 with her latest suspense novel, Fractured. John Grisham is still going strong with Playing For Pizza as the #1 Paperback Fiction for the second week in a row and The Innocent Man stays on as the #17 Paperback Nonfiction.
Little Heathens Chosen as Midwest Booksellers’ Favorite
The Midwest Booksellers have spoken and Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression by Mildred Armstrong Kalish is their pick as the Nonfiction winner of the 2008 Midwest Booksellers’ Choice Award. The Choice Awards honor authors from the Midwest Booksellers Association (MBA) region and books about the region. The Awards will be presented on September 25 during the MBA annual trade show in St. Paul, Minn.
Logorrhea Nabs Three Nominations for the 2008 World Fantasy Awards.
The finalists for the World Fantasy Awards for 2008 have been announced and Logorrhea, an anthology of short stories edited by John Klima and released by Bantam Spectra, racked up three nominations. Two stories from the anthology — “The Cambist and Lord Iron: A Fairy Tale of Economics” by Daniel Abraham and “Singing of Mount Abora” by Theodora Goss — were nominated in the Short Story category. In addition, Logorrhea was selected as one of five finalists in the Anthology category. Also of note, John Klima received a nomination in the Special Award—Non-professional category for his magazine Electric Velocipede. Bantam Spectra author Tim Pratt (The Strange Adventures of Rangergirl) who also has a short story in Logorrhea, received a nomination for his collection Hart & Boot & Other Stories.

Dean Koontz Talks Odd Thomas, Manga Comics, Movies, and Webisodes.
For the first time ever, Dean Koontz attended San Diego ComicCon as part of a special panel focusing on the author and to launch his brand new In Odd We Trust manga graphic novel. In addition he also revealed that a movie version of his book Odd Thomas is in the works. Here is a clip of Dean discussing the Odd Thomas manga, movie, and the serialized webisodes released for his latest hardcover, Odd Hours, which you can view here.

Lessons of Desire Wins RITA Award for Best Historical Romance
Kudos to Madeline Hunter who was named the recipient of the RITA Award for Best Historical Romance for her novel Lessons of Desire. The RITA Award, sponsored by the Romance Writers of America (RWA), is one of the romance-publishing industry’s highest awards of distinction. Winners were announced at the RITA and Golden Heart Awards Ceremony at RWA’s 28th Annual National Conference in San Francisco, California.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Nobel-Prize Winning Soviet Critic, Dies at Age 89
Russian writer, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, whose first novels described the grimness of life in Stalin’s vast labor-camp system, died on Sunday in Moscow at the age of 89. Solzhenitsyn’s work was continually censured by the Soviet press and in the late 1960s he was regarded as a dangerous and hostile critic of Soviet society. Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. The Bantam Classics imprint includes his first novel, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, a scathing indictment of Communist tyranny, and an eloquent affirmation of the human spirit.

Karen Marie Moning’s Darkfever debuts as an audiobook podcast.
Bantam Dell has officially launched the audiobook podcast of New York Times bestselling author Karen Marie Moning’s Darkfever. This the very first joint effort between Bantam Dell and one of its authors to release the full version of a book for free as a podcast. The book will be presented in its entirety, with four episodes per week available for download. Darkfever is the first book in Moning’s Fever series which features protagonist MacKayla “Mac” Lane, a woman who possesses the gift to see beyond the world of man and into the dangerous realm of the Fae.
