Orville Schell, born in New York in 1940, graduated from Harvard University and then spent several years in the Far East studying Chinese.  He covered the war in Indochina, then returned to do Ph.D. work at the University of California at Berkeley.
 
Mr. Schell has written for The New Yorker, Life, Rolling Stone, Look, Atlantic Monthly, and many other publications.  He is the author of In The People’s Republic, co-editor of the first three volumes of The China Reader, and co-author of Modern China.  His other books include The Town That Fought to Save Itself and Brown
