About the Author

Michele Cohen was director of the Public Art for Public Schools program of the New York City School Construction Authority from 1989 to 2009. She left the SCA in the summer of 2009 to accept appointments at Simmons College in Boston as director of the Trustman Art Gallery, as director of the college’s arts administration program, and as a faculty member in the Department of Art and Music. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and is the author most recently of Public Art for Public Schools, which traces the evolution of school art and architecture throughout the 150-year history of the New York City school system. She lives with her family in Massachusetts.
