2. Für Elise was not published during Beethoven's lifetime. It was discovered 40 years after his death in the personal papers of Therese Malfatti--the daughter of one of Beethoven's many physicians. The piece was written as a private gift from the composer to his lady friend. It's believed the editor misread the dedication and instead of Therese substituted the name Elise.
