We had a fantastic weekend of recording The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at ALA June 25-27, finishing the audiobook just in time on Sunday evening, meeting our goal with 301 total voices! Our “studio” inside OverDrive’s DigitalBookmobile was perfect—most of our narrators-for-a-day were reluctant to leave the mic after only one page, and many nailed it on the first take! We had a lot of fun recording and meeting everyone.
The record for youngest participant goes to Lillian Imhoff, age 6! We even had multiple countries represented, with narrators from Canada, England, Wales, Belgium, Germany, Argentina and South Africa.
Many authors attending ALA took time out of their busy schedules to lend their voices too, including Rebecca Stead, Ken Burns, Christopher Paul Curtis, Julia Alvarez, Libba Bray, Holly Black, Cory Doctorow, Dennis Lehane, Jon Scieszka, Michele Norris, Grace Lin, and Roy Blount, Jr., just to name a few.
But we’re not done yet! Our editors are currently working on editing all the voices together into one very unique sounding production, which will be available online in late August. We’re working with First Book, a children’s literacy charity based in DC, to launch a landing page on their website (and on OverDrive) where you can download the finished audiobook itself for a small suggested donation, which will go to First Book, and find out information about the making of the recording. We will also be donating audiobooks to First Book for them to distribute to their network of underprivileged children, families and schools.
Thank you to everyone who came by to read for making this project such a phenomenal success! Listen to these clips for a sneak peek at some of our favorite narrators…
