John K. Ryan's translation of The Confessions of St. Augustine--the greatest spiritual autobiography ever written--captures the thought and flavor of Augustine's writing for modern students. Ryan's main purpose is to provide a clear and accurate rendering of the Confessions by first trying to determine what St. Augustine thought, and then stating those thoughts in clearly understandable English. Faithful to the original Latin text, however, Ryan does not paraphrase or substitute current expressions that corresponed more or less, to those that St. Augustine set down.
