LA Time Book Prizes

The finalists for the 2013 Los Angeles Times Book Prize have been announced. Among the finalists were: Sheri Fink's Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital and Lawrence Wright's Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief in the Current Interest category; Claire Messud's The Woman Upstairs in the Fiction category; Ben Katchor's Hand-Drying in America: And Other Stories in the Graphic Novel/Comics category; John Grisham's Sycamore Row in the Mystery/Thriller category; Matthew D. Lieberman's Social: Why Our Brains are Wired to Connect, Virginia Morell's Animal Wise: The Thoughts and Emotions of Our Fellow Creatures, and Annalee Newitz's Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction in the Science & Technology category. The winners will be named on April 11. Susan Straight, author of Take One Candle Light a Room and A Million Nightingales, will receive the Kirsch Award for lifetime achievement.
