Robert Sklar, the film scholar best known for his classic and comprehensive study of American filmmaking, Movie Made America has passed away at the age of 74. First published in 1975, Movie Made America was in the eyes of many the most complete history of American film available at that time and an update in 1994 helped make the book a fixture of modern American film criticism. Sklar's obituary can be read here.
The New York Times reported on July 9th that Chinese writer and government critic Liao Yiwu, author of The Corpse Walker, had arrived in Berlin after fleeing China. In a telephone interview, Mr. Liao said that "the police had visited him often in recent months to deliver veiled threats that if he published any more works abroad, he would be jailed" and earlier this year he was twice prevented from leaving China to attend literary festivals in Germany and Australia.
