Richard Holbrooke, diplomat and author, dies at the age of 69

To End a War

Richard Holbrooke, noted diplomat, has died at the age of 69. While his diplomatic career spanned from the Vietnam era to the ongoing wars against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he is most recognized for his work spearheading the end of the Bosnian War.

In 1998, Random House published Mr. Holbrooke's diplomatic memoir about the Bosnian peace process, To End a War. A classic account of how foreign policy is made in Washington, the book's lessons go far beyond the boundaries of the Balkans. The New York Times named it one of the Best Books of the Year, calling it "A first-rate diplomatic history. . . ." and historian and social critic Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. noted, "This brilliant and remarkable book is both an absorbing firsthand narrative of the Balkan conflict and an invaluable contribution to the history of our time."
