John Pipkin has won the Steven Turner Award for First Fiction from the Texas Institute of letters for his novel Woodsburner (Nan A. Talese), a powerfully rendered debut about an infamous moment in the life of Henry David Thoreau. The institute was founded in 1936 to recognize literary achievement and to promote interest in Texas literature.
