February 21st marks 100 years since the birth of W.H. Auden, and Random House has published two new collections to mark Auden's centenary. Auden: Selected Poems (Vintage Books) and a new hardcover edition of W.H. Auden: Collected Poems (Modern Library). Information on centenary observances in the U.S., Canada and Britain can be found at http://audensociety.org. Mr. Mendelson is also the author of The Things That Matter, recently published by Pantheon.
The American Political Science Association has presented Mark Danner with the 2006 Carey McWilliams Award for his involvement in exposing the Downing Street Memo in 2005. The NYRB essays on the Downing Street memo, which were recently expanded into his book, The Secret Way to War, link the Administration's secrecy policies to its foreign policy and illuminate the degree to which the strategy of preemptive war has relied not only on distortions of evidence but also on the suppression of public debate through the deliberate marginalization of the democratic public itself in foreign policy deliberations.
This award is presented each year to honor a major journalistic contribution to our understanding of politics.
Douglas L. Wilson was named a two-time winner of the Lincoln Prize when his book Lincoln's Sword: The Presidency and the Power of Words (Knopf) was designated the recipient of $50,000 and a bronze cast of an Augustus Saint-Gaudens portrait sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. Professor Wilson, a co-director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., won in 1999 for Honor's Voice: The Transformation of Abraham Lincoln. “Douglas Wilson's incisive analysis of Abraham Lincoln's presidential writings captures a genius-craftsman at work, molding and honing phrases destined to rally his contemporaries and live in American memory,” said Richard Gilder and Lewis E. Lehrman, the businessmen and philanthropists who established the annual accolade. The prize, to be announced by its administrator, the Lincoln & Soldiers Institute at Gettysburg College, will be awarded at a dinner at the Union League Club of New York on April 2.
