THE DOG RACE

by Elizabeth Mydlowski

There was a dog named Ginger. Ginger ran very fast. There was a dog named Tango. Tango was slow. There was a dog named Snowflake. Snowflake ran very, very fast. There was a dog named Fifi. Fifi didn't like to run. She said, "It will mess up my hair." There was a dog named Casper. Casper was fast. There was a dog named Mario. Mario was sometimes fast and sometimes slow. There were groups of boy and girl dogs lined up for a dog race. Snowflake was a girl dog. Ginger was a girl dog. Fifi was a girl dog, too. Mario was a boy dog. Casper was a boy dog. Tango was a boy, too. Fifi didn't want to go. But everybody said that if you win you will get a big steak. "Okay," said Fifi. Everybody got into their positions. And the race began.

For the boy dogs, Casper was in the lead. And Mario caught up to Casper. Tango was so far behind. Casper and Mario took a rest. Then Tango ran past Casper and Mario, and Tango won for the boys. For the girl dogs, Snowflake was in the lead and Ginger was right behind Snowflake. Fifi was worrying so much about her hair. Snowflake and Ginger took a break to have some water, and Fifi ran right past Snowflake and Ginger. So Fifi won. Tango and Fifi shared their steaks!
